DCFlex: Momentum Builds Across Europe

DCFlex continues to gain momentum in Europe, bringing together utilities, technology providers, and data‑centre operators to accelerate flexible, grid‑ready digital infrastructure. Two major additions recently joined the initiative: ESB and Kraken. ESB’s participation reflects the growing need for practical solutions in Ireland, where data‑centre demand is highly concentrated and grid integration must balance reliability, decarbonisation, and speed to connection. Kraken brings its distributed energy flexibility platform to DCFlex, helping unlock system‑wide flexibility that can ease grid constraints and shorten interconnection timelines.

A major milestone followed with the UK’s first live DCFlex demonstration, delivered with National Grid, Emerald AI, Nebius, NVIDIA, and EPRI. The pilot proved that high‑performance AI data centres can adjust power demand in real time—cutting load by up to 30–40% within seconds—without disrupting critical workloads. The results show how data centres can operate as grid‑responsive assets, supporting resilience and faster connections at scale.

Alongside this progress, EPRI launched Flex MOSAIC, a new DCFlex initiative providing a shared framework to define and validate flexibility from large loads. Flex MOSAIC creates a common language for utilities, regulators, and developers—enabling faster, more predictable access to power while maintaining system reliability.
