EPRI Advances Grid Flexibility Across Europe
Dublin, Ireland (Feb. 9, 2026) EPRI Europe is announcing an initiative to help simplify and accelerate the integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into electricity networks—supporting Europe’s transition toward a more flexible, resilient, and consumer‑centric energy system. EPRI’s Flexible Integrated Technologies Initiative (FLEXIT) focuses on integrating consumer technologies, such as rooftop solar, electric vehicles, heat pumps, battery storage, and smart home devices, into the electric grid.
As electricity demand grows and the amount of variable renewable generation increases, system operators across Europe face pressure to unlock flexibility. This initiative aims to address this challenge by creating a harmonized, streamlined approach to integrating DER aggregators and consumer technologies into grid operations.
The broader FLEXIT initiative brings together a broad coalition of utilities, technology providers, DER manufacturers, aggregators, and DER Management Systems (DERMS) developers. This collaborative model is now being shared with European stakeholders to support similar efforts underway across the EU, the UK, and other regional markets.
“There is a tremendous need for infrastructure investment to meet renewable integration and electrification objectives,” said EPRI fellow in EPRI Europe Mark McGranaghan. “Flexibility from all levels of the grid, including customer loads and resources, is critical to efficient infrastructure development. Standard services and interfaces can help integrate this flexibility.”
The initiative focuses on three core pillars that align closely with Europe’s flexibility ambitions:
- Visibility of distributed resources to support system planning and real‑time operations
- Safe and reliable operation of aggregated DER portfolio
- Harmonized technical protocols and open standards, reducing integration complexity and cost
The initiative builds on global and European efforts and standards todevelop specifications that will help TSOs and DSOs meet demand response requirements.
