OneNet

(One Network for Europe)

As the European power system becomes increasingly decentralised, the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as demand response, storage, and distributed generation, requires a new generation of grid services. Grid operators have a greater need for faster reactions and flexibility. DERs can provide this flexibility, but their safe operation requires secure, reliable communication systems.

One of the largest Horizon projects, with more than 70 partners in the consortium, OneNet has a vision to optimise the European energy system, creating one network for Europe. OneNet aims to create conditions for a new generation of grid services, able to fully exploit DERs, with a consumer-centric approach to grid operation. OneNet will build on concepts from previous EU Horizon projects to create a standardised architecture for the European system. An architecture is a common language and set of rules for interacting systems and devices across the entire network of computer and communications hardware and software used by a grid operator and serves as a foundation for an integrated grid. This will enable the whole European electrical system to operate as a single system, in which a variety of markets allow for the universal participation of stakeholders at every level.

EPRI Europe participation

Work package (WP) 4, in which EPRI Europe has a very active role, has the objective of linking market activities with grid operators to maximise the integration of flexibility service providers. Published deliverables D4.1 and D4.3 discuss this goal from the perspective of TSOs and consumers, respectively. REPowerEU highlights the importance of interoperability—the ability of systems to effectively, reliably, and securely share data.
